Shackelford, Esq,, the canci- date lor Representative to Congress se lected by the Congressional Convention at Fayettevllie for this Congressional Districf, arrived on the steamer A. P. Hurt, this morning, from Fayetteville, and has taken roonli at the Parceil House. He is accom panied by the Onslow delegation, and during the day has held receptions tor the many friends who have called to pay in i respects and oft r bim- their congratuia- tions. Mr. Shackelford was bcrn in Onslow county in thia State, and is now about Ubirty8ix years of aa. He is a farmer, is married, but has no children. Although .not a graduate, he has had t he advantages fo the best EoglUh schools. Was ia lha Confederata army, having enlisted when a mere lad as a private in the Third Xorth Carolina Cavalry, and was taken prisoner near Washington ia this Sta'e in the Spring of 1864, and was cunfiaI for nearly a year in a northern rrison. In 1872 Mr. Shackelford .was a member of the lower housa of the General Assem bly, and in' 1878 ws elected State Senator from the Senatorial District embraced iu the couoties of Qua aw, Jones and Carteret. He was reaided as a ussful member in each branch ot the Assembly, winning the esteem and co&ti denceofbis aRSociales in both houses. Recently, he has been prominently named as a candidate fcr the office of Secret iry of State. Local Ministers' conference. The local minister's conference and campmeetiDg will be held at Rutherford College, commencing July 21st. The local conference is now. a delegated body consisting of two or more delegates frcm each elder's district. Rev. Z. W. Hep tinstall is the president and L. Branson, secretary. The conference, was perma nently established in 1870, since which time it. has held regular meetings annual' ly. It represents tha local ministers in this State abaut 300 in number. This is a bedy of energetic vrorkers, peculiar to Methodism. They do a large amount of missionary work without expense to the Caurcb. The last annual mee ting wbs held at Clayton in October. . Reduced Fares for Delegates to the State Convention. ' The following repaced rates for de'e gates to the Duniojratic State Convention have been agreed to by the companies mentioned, and publication of the same i3 nsa-de by authority of Capt. S. A. Ashe, Chairman of the SUte Executive Committee: The Wett rn Xorth Cirolina Railroad Company; tbe Raleigh and Gaston Rail road Company, the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad Company; the Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad Company; the Spartanburg and Ashevi'.le Railroad Com pany; Iho Wilakgtun and Weldon Railroad Company, aud the Wilmington, Culambia' and Augusta Railroad Com pany will charge three cents a mile each vay.
